A wooden theatre of holiness, To see and to be seen

This spectacular ensemble, according to contract for its creation, is an edefiçio. It was conceived to exalt the Virgin Mary; its grandeur lies in its theatrical and scenographic conception, already present in Juan de Juni's initial design. The architectural structure and the sculptural and pictorial aspects merge, generating a fluid and unitary space through which the sacred actors pass and develop their action, recalling Covarrubias’ description of altarpieces as “caxa de títeres que representan alguna historia sagrada, y de allí les dieron el nombre de retablo” (“boxes of puppets representing some sacred story, and from there they were given the name of ‘tableau’”). Pure theatre.
