Pompeo Caccini, The Ambassador of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria Thanks Margaret of Austria and Philip III for the Help Sent to His Prince Against the Turks in Canissa, oil on canvas, Florence, Uffizi, Inv. 1890, n. 7801.
Margaret and the Ottoman question
This canvas refers to an episode from 1601 and illustrates the energetic role played by the deceased queen during the war against the Ottomans. The appreciation shown by the ambassador of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria underlines the Medici role in this affair. It was known to everyone that Grand Duke Ferdinand I had collaborated with the imperial troops both by sending four thousand infantry and by sending his brother Don Giovanni deβ Medici, who became general field master of the entire army. The episode therefore underlines, albeit with apparent discretion, the Medici centrality of those years.
