Pedro Álvarez de Acosta
(Alpedrinha, Portugal, 1484–El Burgo de Osma, 1563)
Pedro Álvarez de Acosta (Dacosta, or da Costa) was a member of a distinguished noble family from Portugal. He was a nephew of the Archbishops of Braga and Lisbon. Pedro was educated in Rome, next to his uncle, the Cardinal from Alpedrinha, and in 1507 became the Bishopric of Oporto and, later, thanks to his contacts with the Emperess Isabella of Portugal and her children - mainly Joanna of Austria - the Bishopric of León (1535). When Álvarez de Acosta reached El Burgo de Osma, in 1539, he promoted substantial changes in that territory and at the time he encouraged a strong artistic and cultural awareness. Dacosta commissioned the main altarpiece of the Cathedral and founded University of Santa Catalina (1550).
The rich liturgical trousseau still preserved in the Cathedral, as many other masterpieces promoted or commissioned by Álvarez Dacosta, help us to draw the profile of this important prelate, reformist and humanist.
