Giovan Battista Paggi, Philip II is Received in Genoa by the Doge, tempera on canvas, 216 × 268 cm. Florence, Uffizi, Inv. 1890, n. 7846.

Philip II and the relationship with Genoa

This painting thematises the magnanimity of the sovereign who, although at the head of a kingdom of extraordinary size and power, is measured by the homage paid by all the princes and nobles of the Italian peninsula. The episode is particularly significant because it shows how the Medici thought about themselves.
