St. Philipp Neri

(1515-1595)

In an elaborate diplomatic balancing act, in which everyone had to give in to the preeminence of an exclusively Spanish ceremony, the Congregation of Rites, a skillful manoeuvre was made, in which the name of a blessed Italian for whom the Pontiff had great affection and devotion to, Philip Neri, was slipped in. Neri was founder of the Oratory of Santa Maria in Valicella. The final introduction of his name closed the intense negotiations and introduced the Oratorians, whose saint appeared to receive the vision of the Virgin. On 8 January 1622, the Pope officially announced the joint canonisation of the five blessed ones.
