The Baroque liturgy of canonisation

The ceremony began in the Sistine Chapel, from where the pope, in a chair, initiated a procession that would take him to the atrium of the Basilica and from there along the Via Sacra to an ephemeral building, with steps and a plinth, where the canonisation ceremony began. The liturgy for the occasion, purely baroque, focused on a visual richness that was emphasised by means of multi-sensory effects, from the music and chants to the banners, paintings, tapestries, candles, shields, legends, metallic glitter, incense, liturgical ornaments and, of course, the word.
