The sculptors of the altarpiece
Juan Picardo
(1506 ca.-1576 ca.)
Juan Picardo was a French sculptor who, following some other French migrants, settled in Castile in the early decades of the 16th century. His first artworks are easy to find in cities like Burgos – essential to understanding his stylistic roots – and in smaller towns like Peñafiel and Medina del Campo (in the provence of Valladolid), as well as in El Burgo de Osma. He created proposals for the main altarpiece of Astorga Cathedral and the choir stalls of Toledo Cathedral (1539). His masterpiece is the altarpiece of El Burgo de Osma Cathedral, especially the sculptural group portraying the Dormition of the Virgin, which summarise the essential features of his style. He has been described as the heir to Birgarny and Siloe, characterised by a tendency towards idealized and serene beauty, less dramatic and powerful than that of de Juni.
