What happened at this spectacle?

In 1582, Francis of France, Duke of Anjou and proclaimed 'Duke of Bravante' thanks to William of Orange's strategies against Philip II, made his triumphal entry into Antwerp. The city organised a magnificent festive display with an illumination for which hundreds of torches and pyramid-shaped structures with barrels were set up along the route and in the main square, from which flames and fireworks emerged, spreading an intense smell throughout the city.
