Folias. The green galleries of Aranjuez
The main street of the Jardín de la Isla de Aranjuez was covered in the 16th and 17th centuries by galleries, also called “folías”, formed by wooden trellises that served as a guide for the climbing plants that covered them, creating spaces for strolling in relation to the open gardens.
“Folías” arrived in Spain through the influence of Flemish gardens and were an element present in the gardens of Philip II.
These green galleries, as well as creating shaded areas and intimate spaces in relation to the rest of the garden, were intended to be an olfactory stimulus for those who walked along them.
