Funeral for Charles III of Spain

At the request of the viceroy of Peru, Don Teodoro de Croix, this catafalque was erected in the metropolitan cathedral of Lima to honour the memory of King Charles III in the viceroyalty, who died in December 1788. Celebrations took place on 20 and 21 August 1789, presided over by a monumental ephemeral structure, located in front of the presbytery, under the dome of the temple.

A multitude of blandons, tables, candlesticks, and chandeliers adorned the four sides of the royal Tumulus and the naves of the church. All these pieces were of silver, and so many in number that their total weight amounted to three thousand five hundred and thirty marks. The wax which was placed in them and in the Tumulus, was so copious, that on the day when it was all lighted, five thousand eight hundred and fifty lights were counted among those of the Pyre, naves and railings of the Temple; the beautiful prospect of the illumination competing in magnificence with the majestic apparatus and structure of the Tumulus [...]
