In the 17th century, perfumery triumphed in Versailles and spread to the rest of the European courts.

The profession of perfumer became important, and many foreign professionals settled in France. Jean Chabert was one of the most renowned perfumers of the time, establishing in Lyon one of the most important perfume production centres in France. The print shows the perfumer, together with the objects of his trade, opening an incense burner, an emblematic object capable of releasing aromas. From the caption, this engraving seems to be an advertisement for his business, Jardin de Provence, where he sold all kinds of waxes, perfumes, soaps and even aromatic drinks such as Rossolis de Turin.
