Despite the pleas of the city council, which even reached the king, there was no turning back and the new ceremonial remained in place.
To facilitate this absence of contact with the faithful, it was agreed that the relic would be displayed in the pulpits and then directly on the balconies.
The bishop insisted that veneration of the relic consisted of ostenditur (being shown) but not tangitur or deosculatur (being touched or kissed).
There was therefore no touching or kissing and the same ritual was followed as in Rome with the other imprinted copy of the face of Christ, kept in St. Peter’s Basilica.
