The devotional spaces: shrines and balconies

Spaces were created in the cathedral to keep the Holy Face and serve its cult. These reflected both the static nature of the relic, with its permanent shrine in the chancel, and the movement which, in principle, took place on the two great feast days when the relic was taken to the high altar and shown from the balconies. These balconies were orientated towards the open spaces surrounding the cathedral. Their number increased in the new cathedral and they were arranged in a regular pattern.
